Sonnet: A faithful lover

*

He betrayed those he loved, he always had.
And God was one of those
whom he "adored" and "treated bad".
God was like an abused and trampled rose.

I didn't mean to do it, so he said,
not once but several times -- repetitive,
mechanical, and then would plead
sheer weakness and of course God would forgive,

again, again. God didn't seem to learn
how hollow this man was, and what a sham
this man's impassioned promise to return
to the last faithful one who'd stuck with him,

when all the others (and that would include
the man himself) had given up and fled.
